CWS Retained by South San Antonio School District for Security Window Film Installation Project

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The South San Antonio Independent School District [SSAISD] has hired Commercial Window Shield for a safety and security window film installation project for all 13 school buildings in their school system.

The project involves the installation of a clear 8-mil film with a wet-glaze attachment system on all ground-floor entrance doors and windows. In total, 45,000 sq. ft. of safety and security window film will be installed on the buildings’ glass.

The work at SSAISD is scheduled to begin this spring and will be on-going throughout the year.

Funding for the project comes from the state of Texas’s School Safety Standards Formula initiative, which allocated $400 million to public schools for enhanced safety. The initiative was sparked by a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in May 2022 during which 19 students and two teachers were killed and 17 students wounded by a lone gunman who entered the school through a building door.

The SSAISD security window film installation project continues a national trend in which school districts are acting to protect their students and employees from potential violent building intruders with the installation of safety and security window film in vulnerable glass entry areas.

Commercial Window Shield has been at the forefront of the school security movement over the past decade. Including this project, the company has protected the glass in more than 360 school buildings in 12 states.

Elsewhere, the company has completed safety and security film projects at Geneva, Minooka and Lake Zurich school districts in suburban Chicago; Calvert, St. Mary’s and Carroll County [Md.] Public Schools; Mechanicsburg and Bath Local Schools, near Lima, Ohio; Bellmore and Hewlett-Woodmere Public Schools, N.Y.; Hartford, Glastonbury and Simsbury school districts in Connecticut; Norfolk and Henry County in Virginia; Beaverton, Ore.; Comanche Public Schools, Comanche, Okla., Lansdale, Pa. and Katy and Rockwell schools districts in Texas.

With more than 40 years of experience, Commercial Window Shield is one of the nation’s leading security and solar control window film installers. Among its many projects, the company has protected windows at the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, Pentagon, all House of Representative buildings, O’Hare International Airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, the Willis Tower [former Sears Tower], Denver Mint, Grand Central Terminal and the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston.

Out-of-Warranty or Damaged Window Film Can Cause Problems for Building Owners

The development of various window films over the past several decades has been a game-changer for building owners. It started with the creation of solar control window films, which reduce solar heat gain through building windows, making for a more comfortable and energy-efficient environment.

Security window films have made buildings safer, while privacy/decorative films have added to the aesthetic enhancement of modern offices.

Yet building owners often are unaware or ignore the fact that solar control and security window films have warranties of 10 to 15 years, with 10 being the most common. For solar control films, the issue is that they can lose their effectiveness over time. Security window film warranty expiration is, potentially, a more serious issue. If the film is out of warranty and a catastrophic event occurs during which building occupants are injured or worse, potential liability issues fall squarely on the building owner.

For decorative and privacy window films, the issue is general wear and tear of the film that happens in everyday office life, such as furniture bumping into office glass. Once the warranty expires, tenants will have to replace the damaged film at their own cost.

Increasingly popular anti-bird strike films, which prevent birds from flying into building windows, have shorter warranty periods as they are installed on the glass exterior. Because of weather exposure, especially in northern climates, these films can wear out even faster. If the anti-bird strike film loses its effectiveness and bird fatalities increase, they can be subject to pressure from environmental groups, which also results in bad press.

Building owners will want to be more attentive of warranty expiration dates on any window films installed in their buildings. If the films are approaching the end of its warranty period it’s advisable to find a qualified window film removal company. Generally, experienced window film installation companies can handle the task. That can be an especially effective decision if building owners want to replace the old film with new window film as the same window film installation/removal company can handle both tasks.

Window film removal, especially solar control and security window films, is an issue building owners should be pro-active about as liability concerns can be a significant problem.

CK Commercial Hires CWS for Solar Control Installation Project

NORTHERN VIRGINIA – Commercial Window Shield has been hired by CK Commercial for a solar control window film installation project for a high-security tenant.

CK Commercial, based in Millersville, Md., will be building out two floors of a building for their client. As a security measure, included in the buildout project will be the construction of an inside wall around the perimeter of each floor in front of the windows.

Commercial Window Shield will be installing solar control film on the windows to prevent heat buildup between the glass and the newly built walls. The film also will block the unsightly view of the two walls from the exterior.

Commercial Window Shield will begin installing the solar control window film on Feb. 26. Installers will face a tight deadline as construction of the wall will commence as soon as the solar control window film installation project is completed.

In total, Commercial Window Shield will be installing 14,000 sq. ft. of solar control film on 848 panes of glass.

Although this is Commercial Window Shield’s first project with CK Commercial, it has completed numerous projects for some of the country’s top general contractors, including Harvey-Cleary, HITT, DAVIS, Gilbane Building Co., Rand Construction, D Watts Construction, DPR Construction and May Construction.

In addition to the installation of solar control window film, Commercial Window Shield has also completed hundreds of security, RF, switchable smart, privacy/decorative and anti-bird strike window film projects nationwide.

In its more than 40 years in business, the company’s clients have included the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, the Pentagon, all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings, Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, the United Nations, the Willis [former Sears] Tower, O’Hare and Seattle international airports, and the Philadelphia and Denver mints.

HITT Retains CWS For RF Shielding Film Installation Project

KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa. -- HITT Builders have retained Commercial Window Shield for a radio frequency [RF] shielding film installation project.

HITT will be renovating one floor in a building occupied by KBR, an international science, technology and engineering solutions company headquartered in Houston, Texas. Within the revamped floor a sensitive compartmented information facility [SCIF] will be constructed.

SCIFs involve the processing of classified information related to U.S. military, national security and defense, and the country’s intelligence network. With the installation of the RF film by Commercial Window Shield on the SCIF glass, a full-proof method of preventing electronic eavesdropping and theft of secure and classified information from computers, cell phones and other technical equipment will be obtained.

Alarmingly, this has become a serious issue in high-security office buildings and in offices with computers storing vital information, either for the federal government or the private sector. In recent years, Commercial Window Shield has become the go-to installer of radio frequency [RF] shielding film.

The project is expected to begin in winter, 2024. As usual, Commercial Window Shield installers will coordinate schedules with other HITT contractors.

The company’s major focus has been security and solar control window film installation. But in addition to RF and blast films, the company also is expert in installing decorative/privacy, switchable smart and anti-bird strike films as well as polycarbonate protective glass systems.

The company has had a close working relationship with HITT since 2008, having completed numerous window film installation projects. In addition to HITT, Commercial Window Shield works with other top general contractors, including DAVIS, Rand Construction, DPR Construction, D/Watts, Harvey-Cleary and Gilbane Building Co.

Commercial Window Shield clients have included the U.S.

CWS Retained by D Watts for Switchable Smart Film Installation Project

WASHINGTON – D Watts has hired Commercial Window Film for a switchable smart film project for a Washington law firm.

D Watts, an Alexandria, Va.-based construction company, will be building out two floors in a central Washington, D.C. office building for Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.

Commercial Window Shield is a leading installer of switchable smart film. The company’s task in this project is to install switchable smart film on the firm’s multi-purpose conference room on the 5th floor as well as the firm’s boardroom on the 6th floor.  The conference room features curved glass, adding to the complexity of the installation.

The electrical controls for the film will be integrated into the tenant’s Lutron control system. When the film is powered on, the glass remains clear allowing passersby to see inside. When the film is powered off it becomes opaque, blocking views of the interior and turning the glass into a privacy wall.

A second benefit of switchable smart films is that the film is projectable, meaning they can be used as a display screen for viewing power point presentations, videos and other images. The combination of on-demand privacy and turning the switchable smart film into a projectable screen has made switchable smart film a popular choice in recent years for office renovation projects, as is the case with the Orrick project.

The project is expected to commence in early 2024. As always, Commercial Window Shield installers will work closely with D Watt contractors to avoid scheduling conflicts.

Over the years, Commercial Window Shield has worked on numerous window film installation projects for D Watts and others leading construction companies, such as Harvey-Cleary, DAVIS, HITT, Rand Construction, DPR Construction, Gilbane and May Construction.

With nearly 40 years of experience, Commercial Window Shield is among the nation’s leading security window film, solar reflective window film and decorative/privacy window film installers, as well as radio frequency [RF] shielding and anti-bird strike films.

Among its many projects in the Washington area, the company has protected windows at the U.S. Capitol, FBI headquarters, Pentagon, and all House of Representative and Library of Congress buildings. Nationwide, the company has completed projects at O’Hare International Airport, the Willis Tower [former Sears Tower], Grand Central Terminal, Merrill Lynch headquarters, and the Denver and Philadelphia mints.
